About the Cover

The set of photos portrays various stages in the production and application of arc-laminated bamboo lumber. Engineers at the Forest Products Research and Development Institute in Los Baños, Philippines successfully developed a process that uses bamboo splits from middle culms of ‘Kauayan-tinik’ (Bambusa blumeana Schult. f.) and ‘Bolo’ [Gigantochloa levis (Blanco) Merr.]. Mechanical properties and delamination tests of laminated samples showed that this method can lower glue spread to 80 g/m². This would be critical in reducing fabrication costs, as engineered bamboo is utilized as cheaper alternative to wood-based composite panels in housing or building components, furniture, and handicrafts.
