About the Cover

The image shows hazard maps for each of the influencing factors behind the occurrences of forest fires across Benguet, a province in the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines known for its vast expanse of natural vegetation. Taken into account were vegetation moisture, elevation, slope, aspect, distance from roads, and vicinity to settlements in studying a total of 90 forest fire incidents during the period from 2019–2021. Compared to the structural fire index, the fire risk and hybrid fire indices both yielded better modeling results, with the former even coinciding with occurrences in areas identified as having high and very high susceptibility ratings. The integration of these indices into local management strategies, in the form of policy-making and action plans, may reduce the impact of forest fires and thereby protect lives and property.
