About the Cover
The photo shows micrographs of various diatom and dinoflagellate species found in Philippine seas. The current research status and knowledge on the plastic-microbe association focus on how plastic surfaces serve as a new environment for marine microbes, how this system could become dispersal mechanisms of unwanted microorganisms, and how microbes possibly contribute to the biodegradation of plastics in the marine environment. These translate to possible research opportunities for scientists in the Philippines which, despite being suggested as the third-largest contributor to marine plastic debris, currently does not have any existing national research programs on basic plastics research. This, in turn, results in a limited understanding of the extent and implications of marine plastic pollution in the country. To learn more, go to page 71–82.
